Palazzo Colombi
The apartment is finely refined and it is the perfect place for your comfortable and unique holidays.
The building is just close by the famous Palace Poliziano where in the 1454 was born Angelo Ambrogini,
commonly known by his nickname Il
Poliziano, the famous Italian Classical scholar and poet
of the Florentine Renaissance. The Colombi Palace was built in the 17th century and its name comes from a
student, Cesare Colombi, where he was born in 1828, which as been one of the heroes of the battle of
Curtatone in 1848, where he died fighting for the independence of Italy. In fact, during the period
of "Risorgimento" Montepulciano hosted many famous revolutionary heroes among with Giuseppe
Garibaldi, Giuseppe Mazzini and Silvio Pellico.
One of Italy's most unusual sporting events is Bravio delle Botti, a centuries-old race taking place in the tiny
village's stone streets on the last Sunday in August each year, with eight teams, known as "Contrade",
competing to roll enormous empty wine barrels along the course in the quickest time possible.
Each barrel is rolled by two 'springitori' (barrel rollers), representing a different district of the village.
They compete for a palio - the painted silk banner traditionally awarded to Tuscan sporting victors - etched
with an image of San Giovanni Decollato, the patron saint of Montepulciano.
The Colombi Palace apartment has two windows facing on the street where the race takes place.
